Take it or Make it/ 2016

Coreography Ana Vujanovic and Marta Popivoda

Take it or Make it was made with Chilean Artists within the initiative Movimento Sur at Nave in Santiago de Chile (July 2016).

Take it or Make it is an experimental artistic process based on the premise of working together, in a group, on the issue of the democracy as a real-existing organization of social situation. The experiment takes as its point of departure the cinematic score by experimental filmmaker Heinz Emigholz for his movie Schenec-Tady I (1973).

Several solos, composed of actions compose group situations. They are several universes, created as self-sufficient worlds whose actors individually interpret one score. The score, like in music, restricts them and builds their common ground. In the group situations every participant / performer is considered equal. One would expect that these situations would be harmonious, following the principle that one's freedom ends where someone else's freedom begins. But we know that it doesn't function. What we still don't know is whether the realization of that principle would a dream or a nightmare. Where are passions, visions, and beliefs in that “live and let live“ liberalism? Where is the “common world“?

Based on these premises, Take It or Make It is a workshop in social choreography of democracies, whose main problem is how to configure a group situation on stage democratically. It raises the question: Do we, living people have will, skills and power to render democracy our organizational principle? Are we capable of making – instead of taking (or leaving) – it?
